Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University and Bath Spa University Collaborate on Research to Preserve Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage

Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, in partnership with Bath Spa University (UK), as well as the Kyiv School of Economics and the International University of Economics and Humanities in Rivne, has joined an international research project focused on the impact of war on Ukraine’s cultural heritage.

Bath Spa University received a British Academy Pump Priming 2025 grant, which provided funding for this initiative. The collaboration resulted in the publication of the analytical report “Assessing the Impact of the Russian Invasion on Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage and Creative Industries.”

Prepared by the Ukrainian partners, the report documents the severe losses of both tangible and intangible cultural heritage caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It highlights the destruction of cultural sites, the disruption of creative industries, and the broader threats to national identity and cultural resilience.

The report is available in open access in English (read here) and in Ukrainian (read here).

This research has laid the groundwork for a joint Horizon Europe application (submitted in September 2025) under the call HORIZON-CL2-2025-01-HERITAGE-07: Cultural Strategies for Peace: culture and creativity as catalysts for conflict prevention and post-conflict reconciliation. The proposed project aims to develop cultural strategies that foster peacebuilding and reconciliation, using creativity and heritage as tools for recovery and dialogue in post-conflict societies.

The cooperation between CHNU and Bath Spa University underlines the importance of international partnerships dedicated to safeguarding cultural heritage, strengthening resilience, and building pathways to peace.

The report authored by Ian Gadd, Alina Kruhliak, Viktoriia Artiushok, Iryna Budz, Volodymyr Starzhets, Vitalii Levytskyi, Myroslava Zhavoronkova, Khrystyna Kryliuk, Kostiantyn Kyrychenko, Oksana Dovhopolova, Anton Liahusha
